Wrestler Retrospect: Dean Ambrose

Next up on my Retrospects of former Shield members.  I wouldn't say second favorite (I think I may have jumped the gun and called Reigns my favorite out of the three), because he's pretty close to being neck and neck with Reigns: Dean Ambrose.

I first found Ambrose while watching some of Seth Rollins FCW matches on YouTube.  He interjected himself into one of Rollins matches and I was hooked.  I found any match I could with Ambrose in it.  His series of matches with Rollins are quite entertaining.  As well as his matches against William Regal.

I found out later that he was popular on the independent circuit as Jon Moxley.  I've never seen any of those matches, but I've heard that some are pretty brutal.

I'm not sure what it was.  His erratic precision? (I'm sure you're wondering what that is.  The man can act super erratic, yet pull off a move like that's exactly how it's supposed to be done.  It's pretty cool to watch.)  The way he does crazy so well?  The man has something that draws you in.  Then he gets on the mic and you're hooked.

When the Shield first premiered he was like their unofficial leader.  He'd be at the fore front of their promos as their mouth piece, and what a great job he did.  He reminds me of no one else on the mic.  He just has an aura that draws you in, then he opens his mouth and can cut down his opponent like a knife and be insane while he does it.

Dean's gimmick is that he's not all there.  He's unstable, like all his merchandise can attest.  The announcers call him the Lunatic Fringe.  (A name I can give or take.)  Not sure what it means really, but Lunatic is what he is.  He does so well at it too.  I've seen his character compared to Heath Ledger's Joker if that tells you anything.  And it's a pretty accurate comparison.  He's not crazy in that you can imagine him killing you or anything.  Just that you can't tell what he's going to do because he's unpredictable.  He could pop out of a present and attack you!  (That was pretty entertaining by the way.)

He's no slouch in the ring either.  His charisma means that he can pull off simple moves, like his rebound clothesline, but make it look interesting but believable.  His finisher is another testament to how well he can make a simple move look amazing.  Dirty Deeds is essentially grabbing his opponent in a headlock and dropping face first to the mat.  It's not anything spectacular, but the way Dean pulls it off makes it look out of the box.

Dirty Deeds

If you're looking for proof of what Ambrose can do I suggest looking up his FCW matches.  They're fun and interesting.  If you're really looking for something special there are two shining examples.

The first is his long awaited bout against Seth Rollins at SummerSlam.  The is a match fans had been waiting for since the break-up of the Shield.  When it finally rolled around people were a little less than thrilled to hear it was a lumberjack match.  That may have been the point.

A lumberjack match is a one on one match, but the ring is surrounded by wrestlers that keep the action in the ring.  If one guy gets thrown out these wrestlers shove him back in, sometimes proceeded by a beatdown, and the match continues.  Pretty standard and pretty lame if you ask me.  I mean really, when was the last time someone said one of their favorite matches was a lumberjack match?  Not me.

That is until SummerSlam 2014.

This match was so unpredictable.  Not only did Rollins and Ambrose put on a great one on one match, but everyone, and I mean the lumberjacks, were involved.  Something I'd never seen before.  I don't know if I could really do it justice in explaining it, you just have to watch.  That's how crazy it was.

The next night on Raw the two put on what's being garnered as a match of the year candidate.    The two put on a match that was so back and forth and intense that it had me on the edge of my seat. With a crazy shocking ending.  And, thanks to the internet, I already knew how it ended.

It's hard to put into words what makes Dean Ambrose fun to watch.  I guess it would be his unpredictability that keeps you on the edge of your seat is why he's so much fun.  Like C.M. Punk or Daniel Bryan, I can see Ambrose beating the odds of being an independent guy to become WWE Champion.  We all know how WWE feels about popular independent guys.

He's just so talented I can see him beating thos

e odds.
