Pick of the Month: Green Lantern #18

I was kinda surprised to go with the pick that I did.  I've wanted to pick one from the new Shadowman run, but haven't picked an individual issue I've liked more than the rest.  I think it's been good as an entire story and not just a single issue.  Hopefully next month will be different.

This months pick comes from my favorite superhero's monthly title.  Green Lantern #18!

Green Lantern #18 picks up with Baz (the newest Green Lantern of Earth) waking up in the dead zone where Hal and Sinestro have been.  When Baz informs them who he is there is a lot of bickering between the two about the choice the ring made and the fact that he's gotten himself killed already.  Hal then realizes that Baz is still wearing the ring, and thus must still be alive, more bickering ensues.  Hal states that the ring belongs to him and Sinestro disputes that he's the rightful ring bearer.  Just when things begin to go nowhere a portal opens (B'dg forces Black Hand to reopen it) and begins to pull Baz back to the living world.  As Baz begins to be pulled back his ring makes a duplicate and it tries to go to Hal.  Sinestro intercepts it and is pulled back to the living world along with Baz.  Hal is left in the deadzone with Black Hand and the other lost souls.  The book is left on a cliffhanger (literally) with Hal coming up with a plan to get back to the real world himself.

Although there wasn't much action in this book I think the story made up for it.  It again points to how much Baz can really do with the ring.  Sinestro's villainous personality once again rears it's ugly head and Hal leaves us with a shock that was foreshadowed in a previous book but never really thought it'd go down that way.

Geoff Johns is a master storyteller that leaves you guessing but usually pays off big in the end.  This book, to me, is just a grim reminder of what we'll miss when he finally leaves the book in only a couple of issues.
